Every Summer (Poem)

sunlight bouncing
on ruby red tiles
a crown of vines swirling
around stone columns
leading the way to
wind caressing
shy-to-bloom roses
grass swaying
against small ankles
We shook
the cypress tree to invent
verdant snow
We unleashed
the hose to fashion
delicate rain
We concocted
potions
of mud
and baby’s breath
built palaces
from twigs
and mile-long rope
negotiated treaties
with bread
dipped in iced tea
We
were gods
In grandmother’s garden.
